AUHIP

African Union High Implementation Panel (on Sudan and South Sudan). A body mandated to facilitate negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan.

CPA

Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Signed in January 2005 by the Government of Sudan and the SPLM, this formally ended the war between them. It provided for the referendum on self-determination which eventually led to the independence of South Sudan.

Catholic Radio Network - a news service which covers South Sudan

CSR

corporate social responsibility - an agenda space for making companies more accountable to the society in which they operate

GDP

gross domestic product, a commonly-used measure of national production

GOS

Government of Sudan

GOSS

Government of South Sudan (or, before Independence, 'Government of Southern Sudan')

ICC

International Criminal Court

IRIN

Integrated Regional Information Networks: a news and analysis service funded under the UN's OCHA

Juba Declaration

An arrangement made in 2006, following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, under which members of the GOS-backed SSDF (South Sudan Defence Forces) could join (or in many cases re-join) the SPLM and SPLA.

MDG

Millenium Development Goal: any one of a set of targets agreed at the UN Millenium Summit (2000) for member states to achieve by 2015.

MDTF

Multi-Donor Trust Fund - a mechanism for disbursing aid to GOSS in the pre-independence and early post-independence period through projects under the supervision of the World Bank

National Baseline Household Survey - a 2009 undertaking by by SSCCSE with international agencies

NFIs

Non-food items: basic goods such as tarpaulins for shelter, blankets and household utensils which are commonly distributed to disaster-affected people by emergency relief agencies

NPGC

This might mean either the National Petroleum and Gas Commission or the National Petroleum and Gas Corporation.

OSI

Open Society Institute, a major grant-making organization founded by financier George Soros.

Sudan Catholic Radio Network - a news service covering South Sudan

SHHS

Sudan Household Survey. Major operation for establishing social statistics. A first round was carried out in 2006 and a second round in 2010. No report for the Southern Sudan component in 2010 seems to have been made public.
